Remembrance Weekend 2011

This past weekend Gettysburg was bustling with visitors, re-enactors,
actors and many other notable guests here to commemorate the 148th
Anniversary of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.  It felt very much like everyone
here was anticipating the official commemoration of the 150th Anniversary
of the Battle of Gettysburg in 2013. There was excitement in the air, AND,
it will definitely be a very exciting few years for Gettysburg.

Of course the Remembrance Day Parade marched right past The
Gaslight Inn to thrill all of the guests on our porch.  The parade is
always very emotional as the sea of soldiers on horseback and on
foot march down Middle Street.  Below is a photo I
took to give you an idea of what passed by the Inn.

Another very special event that happened on November 20th was the laying of a headstone for Sadie Shriver.  Sadie was 7 years old during the Battle of Gettysburg living on her grandparents farm at the base of Big and Little Round Tops.  Sadie died of consumption 11 years after the Battle, 2 weeks short of her 19th birthday.  She was laid to rest in Evergreen Cemetery.  For reasons unknown no marker was placed on her grave.  Read the Shriver story at www.shriverhouse.org/theshrivers.  Their story is interesting and from the viewpoint of the civilian experience.
